Being Adopted

Wilkerson, Amy. Being Adopted. Illus. by Erin Kim & Caleb Yee. 2021. 44p. Fulton Books, $25.95 (9781638600886). Grades Pre-K-3.

A child-centered tool for supporting families in conversation with young adoptees. This book beautifully illustrates the complexities and nuances of being adopted for a young reader with care. Visual representation includes a diverse representation of adoptive families’ race, family structure, and more. The illustrations appear to include both watercolor and digital illustrations. The images are simplistic, but outline important messages encompassing the range of emotions that come with being adopted. This book can be used at home or in a classroom proactively to validate an adoptee’s experience or to support children in learning about this invisibilized identity.

Buy it! An essential book to have on the adoptee bookshelf.
