Mama’s Home

Youngblood, Shay. Mama’s Home. Illustrated by Lo Harris. 2022. 40 p. Make Me a World, $18.99 (9780593180228) Recommended grade levels PreK-3.

A young child living with a single mother who often travels for work spends each day of the week with a different “Mama”. For each of the seven days, each Mama is unique and impactful through how they love and raise the child whether through food, song, or braiding the child’s hair. This book is a love letter to a chosen family and a beautiful representation of what caregiving in a community can look like. Each Mama is a different shade of Black and Brown and the illustrations expand on the ways in which they love the child. This book would be a warm, fuzzy, heartwarming bedtime story for a family like this one and is highly recommended for curriculum on family structure with young learners.

Buy It or Borrow It! PreK-2nd grade teachers will want this book on their shelves.
